City Of Angels
Rather than jumping straight in the deep-end like a buffalo off a cliff, I have decided to make the next few post’s overviews, if you will, of certain styles, artists or labels that are currently exciting me… some old tracks and some new!
We've all, willingly or unwillingly, been lambasted by Dubstep in any of it’s subsidiary styles; Purple, wobble, wonk or any other such silly name we seem attribute to it.
But over the last 12 months more and more producers and beatmakers seem to be gravitating towards the experimental side of things, here I am referring to the LA scene; Godfathered by the sublime Flying Lotus, who also just so happens to be Alice and John Coltrane’s nephew! And the rest of the Brainfeeder Crew....
Oh, and here's a little introduction from Radio 1 legend Mary Ann Hobbs (I want her to read me bed-time stories!)
Flying Lotus ft. Thom York – ....and the World laughs with You - This has to be one of the best songs of the year, a mighty first post, me thinks! Thom's typically haunting and enchanting vocal (when following this blog it may become apparent that i have an unhealthy obsession with Radiohead) combined with Lotus's discordant and convulsive yet beautifully melodic production - oh yeah it's a goodun'
Daedelus - Fair Weather Friends - Great Hip Hop producer, great name (for anyone else who's 'into' Greek mythology) and a great song, once you succumb to the ridiculous vocal (Poignant and evocative synths - has similarities with Crystal Castles 'Alice Practice', just sedated and minus the violent Nintendo bleeps!)
The XX - Islands (Nosaj Thing Rmx) - Behind all the hype The XX really are a fantastic band, and Nosaj things percussive bleepy production is faultless - and if you ever get the chance to watch him LIVE do! The best sample-paddder, if that's a word, I have ever seen!
Dr.Strangeloop - We are Lost Mammals of an approaching transcendental Epoch? Firstly, anyone who names themselves after, albeit a pun on, a Kubrick movie is gunna be pretty damn cool! Secondly, he's the guy who taught Lotus how to produce when studying at film school together, this 17 minuets of stockhausian liquid super-synthesis is an atmospheric masterpiece. nuff said.
