New Wiley... 'Numbers in Action'

Feast your eyes, ladies and gents, on the brand new video for Wiley's 'Numbers in Action.' Undoubtedly the ultimate video by the grime godfather, and in his own words 'the best video I ever done,' it's a superb visual accompaniment to the minimal bounce of the song.

Numbers in Action will be released on the 16th May and is the first single from the brand new studio album '100% Publishing,' due for release on the 4th July on Big Dada.

Flowers for Jun - Nujabes Tribute & Hope for Tommorow Tsunami Fundraiser

When browsing the pages of word is bond, one of the internet's best underground hip-hop blogs, i stumbled across their collection of the various tribute tracks, and reinterpretations of tracks, in memory of Nujabes; the Japanese producer who so effortlessly fused jazz and hip hop with such tenderness & subtlety - who sadly died last february in a car accident. Various producers & composers including collaborators, hydeout productions artists & underground Japanese instrumental beatmakers reinterpret Nujabes' nostalgic compositions or create original works in memory of one of the finest & most important hip hop producers of all time, well for me anyway.

About Group - 'You're No Good' [2011]

Above is the recent single from About Group (featuring Charles Hayward, Pat Thomas, John Coxon and Alexis Taylor), who released their second record 'Start & Complete' on Domino Records. The track takes inspiration from 'Terry Riley's landmark 1967 track, on which the minimalist composer took Harvey Averne's latin-tinged soul track, You're No Good, and turned it into a free flowing piece of tape loop improvisation. Running two copies of the track alongside one another, Riley weaved between the tapes, dropping out and slowing down the song'.

Harvey Averne Dozen - 'You're No Good' [1968]

The group's first record was subtly released under the moniker of Hayward/Coxon/Thomas/Taylor in 2009, simply titled 'About' on Treader. The album is the product of one day's improvisation by the group, resulting in 4 tracks, including 'Forgacs' which you can hear below: HAYWARD/COXON/THOMAS/TAYLOR “ABOUT” - #2: Forgacs by charleshayward

Wagon Christ - 'Chunkothy'

Taken from the new Wagon Christ album 'Toomorrow', out now on CD, LP and download: http://bit.ly/hWkL1n. The one and only Luke Vibert returning to the fray - the king of stoned exotica, ridiculous vocal samples, toothsome puns, swinging rhythm and the psychedelic groove, Vibert has never been one to take himself too seriously, but his music continues to delight.

The 'Chunkothy' video is directed and animated by Celyn Brazier at Nexus with Beccy McCray providing invaluable production skills. Bali Engel helped colour and provided the beautiful animated sequences for the insect loop and fishes. Margot Tsakiri-Scanatovits and Manav Dhir also provided colouring skills and contributed to the animation of the insects. Steve Mc Inerney constructed the final edit with perfect timing and imagination.

The animation was created in Photoshop, with most sequences on one layer. It was as simple as that really. No gimmicks, no tweeny motion tricks, no cgi. Celyn created small beat guides for reference, sometimes following the rhythm, for example on the bouncy ball loops, but mostly as many random patterns and as much weird sh*t that she could possibly make in six weeks.

Look out for the Mexican cat!

As it is written henceforth… that on the Fourth Day, the cosmic strumpet of Mother Nature was spawned to envelop this Third Planet in Funkadelical Vibrations. And she birthed Apostles Hendrix, Sun Ra, Stone & Clinton to preserve all funkiness of man unto eternity… But! Fraudulent forces of obnoxious jivation grew; Sun Ra strobed back to Saturn, to await his next reincarnation, Jimi was forced back into basic atoms; Sly was co-opted into a jester monolith… and only seedling Clinton remained! As it came to be, he did indeed, begat Funkadelic to temporarily restore Funk Within The Universe… but out of the temporal vacuum rose Disco Stew’s ferocious funk & stone-cold soul to conquer & envelop funky disco forevermore… The plea: Free Your Mind, and as a result of grooveation & Funkadelic causation; Your Ass Will Follow!

CARIBOU // FOUR TET

Four Tet, Kieran Hebden to friends, has always been a personal favourite of ours over here at Hydrogen Jukebox. Even if some of us don't always step up to the plate soon enough when tickets for a local show are going fast (Fred...), thus missing a great show. And it was a great show.

Caribou is a Canadian glitch magician, in a similar vein to that of the afore mentioned Mr Hebden. Despite a name change from Manitoba in 2004, Daniel V. Snaith has been releasing bubbling electonica with softly-sung melodies ever since. His 2010 album Swim garnered universal acclaim, and is undoubtedly one of the best records of last year.

In honour of these guys, we're putting up a few of their harder to find/more recent tracks for your enjoyment, some of which feature on their upcoming split 12" to be released on Text Records, as well as a namesake classic at the bottom. Enjoy!
